Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 belong to the coronavirus family of viruses of the genus Betacorona viruses. The virus originated in China and caused the first wave of its infection in the end of 2019. It rapidly spread across China and then across the globe in no time. The virus caused pneumonia with respiratory depression and eventually death.

Transmission of the Virus

SARS COV-2 is transmitted via aerosols (droplets) during coughing or sneezing or through close contacts with an infected person (direct contact transmission). The incubation period if the virus ranges between 7 to 14 days after which the clinical symptoms appear. Symptoms include:

Fever and cough
Breathing difficulties and fatigue
Loss of taste and smell sensation
Acute respiratory distress in severe cases (especially seen with chronically ill and elderly patients)

Diagnostic Guidelines

The diagnostic process begins with a test called RT-PCR (reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction) that detects the presence of virus. The samples for the test are taken either from upper respiratory tract (nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal swabs) or from lower respiratory tract (bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, tracheal secretions, sputum etc.). Next is the detection of antibodies against SARS COV-2 in blood. This allows the detection of sub-acute or sub-clinical cases of the infection from within a few days of contact up to 14 days after the appearance of symptoms.

The detection of specific antibodies against SARS COV-2 allows the expansion of diagnostic window beyond the first one to two weeks of infection. Moreover, it can also be used for outbreak monitoring and answering epidemiological and virological questions related to COVID-19.
