Disease information

Throughout life, old bone is constantly removed (bone resorption) and replaced by new bone (formation). This continual process, named bone remodeling, is essential for the maintenance of healthy bone mass and structural integrity1.

Bone turnover markers (BTMs) are released during the bone remodeling process and are measurable in blood or urine. Bone markers may be classified as bone formation markers N-terminal propeptide of type 1 collagen (PINP) and osteocalcin or resorption markers such as the tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b (TRAC-5b)
