Disease information

CD163 is a membrane protein limited exclusively to the cells of immune system such as monocytes and macrophages. When these come into contact with a foreign stimulus e.g. bacterial molecules, the CD163 is enzymatically cleaved to soluble CD163 (sCD163). In glomerulonephritis, macrophages migrate into the tissue and release sCD163 into the urine. Thus, this marker can be measured in the urine for disease diagnosis.

Diagnostic Guidelines

sCD163 is a specific indicator of renal inflammation. Diagnostics are based on its estimation through ELISA. Increase levels indicate inflammatory activity within the kidney. If a patient with a diagnosed renal disease is under treatment and sCD163 concentrations become elevated after having been normal during the course of the treatment, it indicates renewed outbreak of kidney inflammation. This information is then used to adjust treatment options and plans.
