Calcitonin is a peptide hormone that acts as an antagonist to parathyroid hormone. It is released from the thyroid gland in response to elevated blood calcium levels. Resultantly, it lowers the levels of calcium by promoting its uptake by the bones. Overall, the levels are a good indicator of the bone activity status.

Diagnostic Guidelines

Calcitonin serodiagnostics are mainly done for cold nodules of thyroid. The levels are particularly increased in medullary carcinoma of thyroid (C-cell carcinoma). In such patients, 20 to 30% have hyperparathyroidism as well. Other conditions that can have increased calcitonin levels are:

Final trimester of pregnancy
People taking oral contraceptives
After calcium infusion

Similarly, decreased levels are observed in osteopenia, which marks the beginning of osteoporosis.
