Polyendocrinopathy

Disease information

Polyendocrinopathies are autoimmune diseases characterized by immune mediated destruction of endocrine tissues. They are labelled “poly” because they involve at least two endocrine diseases and one or more antibodies against endocrine organs, parietal cells of the stomach and striated muscles.

Diagnostic Guidelines

Diagnosis is based upon detection of antibodies through indirect immunofluorescence on frozen sections of adrenal cortex, ovary, placenta and testes (for autoantibodies against steroid-hormone producing cells). Moreover, sections of thyroid and parathyroid glands, pancreas and striated muscles enable parallel detection of other associated antibodies, if any.
