Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a progressive disease characterized by destruction and sclerosis (fibrosis) of primarily the extra-hepatic ducts. With a prevalence of 8 to 14 per million of the population per year, PSC is more frequent in males than females (accounting for 60 to 80% of the cases). Another striking observation regarding primary sclerosing cholangitis is its association with chronic inflammatory bowel disease (85 to 90% with ulcerative colitis and 10 to 15% cases with Crohn’s disease).
Most patients with PSC are seropositive for pANCA; an antibody against granulocytes (white blood cells) with primary antigen target being the DNA-bound lactoferrin. Since most cases of the disease are diagnosed between ages 30 and 60, it’s important to arrange for an appropriate screening and diagnostic session if you’re experiencing liver problems while having the red flag (age factor) wobbling over your shoulders.
