The hallmark of connective tissue diseases is the presence of antibodies directed against nuclear antigens. These antibodies are called ANAs (anti-nuclear antibodies) and are serological markers for CTDs. The target antigens can be:
These antibodies are implicated in 20 to 100% of the cases. Therefore, differential ANA diagnostics is an indispensable parameter for diagnosis of connective tissue diseases and their differentiation from other autoimmune diseases.
