Parasites are eukaryotic organisms that live and derive their nutrition from their hosts. They vary in terms of their structures and life cycles and range from simple unicellular organisms (protozoa) to complex worm structures (helminths). Symptoms in parasitic infections are mainly dependent upon the causative organism. However, these infections are rarely life-threatening since these parasites are dependent upon the host’s well being for their own survival. These usually result in long standing and chronic conditions and emergency diagnostics are not required except for suspected acute malaria.
