Disease information

Different infections during pregnancy that can be transferred from mother to child are generally referred to as TORCH. These include:

  • Toxoplasmosis
  • Rubella
  • Cytomegalovirus
  • Herpes simplex virus
  • Clamydia trachomatis
  • Varicella zoster virus

These infections are associated with serious birth abnormalities in children and hence need special consideration.

Diagnostic Guidelines

For TORCH infections, a mother is assessed for specific antibodies that dictate her immune status. This testing for antibodies against TORCH is an important part of pre, peri and post-natal care. Antibodies give information about the mother’s immune status, recent or previous infections or reactivations. The tests are usually carried out during the first trimester. However, they can also be done on a new-born. If detected early, TORCH infections can be effectively treated and the risk of birth defects in fetus and fetal mortality can be duly avoided.
