Respiratory infections are mainly caused by viruses (influenza viruses, adenoviruses and RSV) or bacteria (legionella, bordetella pertussis, mycoplasma pneumoniae etc.). They can involve both the upper respiratory tract including the nasal mucosa and paranasal sinuses, and the lower respiratory tract all the way up to bronchi and bronchioles. Apart from a cough and other respiratory manifestations such as pneumonia, these also cause pharyngitis, fever and headache (due to sinusitis).
