Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) are worldwide distributed, human pathogenic viruses from the family Herpesviridae. If the lips and facial region are affected, HSV-1 is usually the pathogenic agent while genital infections can be caused by either virus type. In 20% to 30% of cases they are caused by HSV-1.
In primary infections the virus penetrates the mucosal cells, multiplies and is released in ulcers or inflammatory skin blisters. Infections persist lifelong, alternating between asymptomatic and acute phases. In adults, HSV infection may cause encephalitis or meningitis and, in immunodeficient patients, also disseminated infections which may cause lesions at different locations in the skin, or enter into the central nervous system. Alongside mild courses, infections in newborns may also lead to neonatal herpes encephalitis or to disseminated forms. Infections in foetuses often result in intrauterine death, malformations or preterm birth.
